Affirmative Therapy for Transgender (TGNCNB) Communities

@catpalmerphotography

I am a white, cisgender clinical psychologist who focuses on providing affirming care to gender expansive clients and women identified individuals.

The fun stuff — I have 6 (yes, 6) rescue animals. They keep me on my toes daily. I enjoy spending my free time doing anything outdoors – snowboarding, paddle boarding, hiking, backpacking. I am originally from Seattle, however prior to moving to SLC, I lived in Memphis for 4 years and Baltimore for 6 years. Each city provided wonderful experiences and cultures – yet I am happy to be back in the mountains!

I received my Doctoral training from The University of Memphis in Counseling Psychology. During my training, I focused not only my clinical work, but also my research, on issues unique to women identified individuals. My dissertation “The Psychological Distress Experienced in Women Seeking Educational Upward Mobility: The Role of Backlash, Self-Esteem, and Race” gave me an even more in-depth exploration into the mental health needs of high-achieving women. I received my Master’s in Community Counseling from Gonzaga University and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Washington.

My internship was completed at Towson University where I continued to focus my work on marginalized communities, women identified clients and those in the queer community. I partnered with DC based Men Can Stop Rape to implement Health Masculinity Action Project on Towson’s campus and to “shift the responsibility of deterring harm away from women by promoting healthy, nonviolent masculinity”.

I have been providing care to clients in LGBTQ communities since graduate school in Memphis, TN, where I provided research assistance for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Allies (LGBTQA) Research Team and collaborated with OUT Memphis on helping queer youth access care. My work has focused on a social justice oriented, feminist lens. Further training and experience opportunities led me to Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore City, MD, a healthcare leader that began as a gay men’s health clinic in 1978. As a post-doctoral psychologist at CBHC, I collaborated with primary care medical providers, endocrinologists, infectious disease care, and outreach services to help address the mental health needs of LGBTQ clients; co-led groups focusing on gender exploration as well as groups for clients who have received a new diagnosis of HIV and groups for HCV clients receiving care. Building my knowledge base has continued not only with years of CEU programs, but also a graduate certificate from Widener University in Affirming Approaches for Transgender Individuals and Communities. I have additionally completed an intensive training program in teaching transgender content to cisgender adults through The Transgender Training Institute. I have recently partnered with organizations on the western slope of Colorado and in the Salt Lake Valley to provide continuing education training to medical organizations, mental health group practices, and community spaces. My training and consultation practice, A Path Towards, provides teaching and support to other providers, clinicians, communities, and family members how to support, affirm, and understand the transgender and non-binary people in their lives.

I am dedicated to ongoing advocacy and consciousness-raising, including pro-bono contributions to gender diverse communities and continue to receive supervision from clinicians of lived experience to further my knowledge and growth working with trans and gender diverse clients.

I am a member of the Utah Psychological Association, LGBTQ-Affirmative Psychotherapist Guild of Utah, Association for Women in Psychology, WPATH, and Women in Private Practice organizations.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, ENDLESS LAUGHS

Macaroni

Macaroni was the 6th addition to the pet family. A rescue from North Carolina, Mac loves to be out in the woods, frolicking in the snow, paddle boarding, and waiting by the fridge for snacks. The pandemic has shifted the teletherapy and work from home world — you may see Macaroni in the background at times.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, ENDLESS CUDDLES

Mako

Mako was the 5th addition to the pet family.  A rescue from North Carolina, Mako is spoiled and knows it. Her favorite thing is to snuggle in bed and give kisses. She loves to husky-talk and demand neck scratches. The pandemic has shifted the teletherapy and work from home world — you may see Mako in the background at times.
